Radical politics in Latin America today

Speakers:

Jeffery Webber (author of The Last Day of Oppression, and the First Day of the Same)

and Dave Kellaway (Socialist Resistance).

The “Bolivarian revolution” and left governments are in retreat. In Venezuela, Chavez has died and Maduro is faltering; in Brazil, President Rousseff of the PT has been deposed in a soft coup; in Cuba Castro has died and the economic reforms are underway. What are the prospects in Latin America for the left and social movements to resist neoliberalism and the right?

Jeff Webber and Dave Kellaway will discuss the political dynamics and conflicts underpinning the evolution of left-wing governments and social movements in Latin America in the last two decades.

The Last Day of Oppression, and the First Day of the Same (The Politics and Economics of the New Latin American Left) by Jeffery Webber is published by Pluto Books. Copies will be available for sale at the meeting.
