Imperialism, Orientalism and Social Emancipation- Kent, 21 March

13th Mar 2019

The Postcolonial Centre is launching its new Imperialism and Culture Annual Lecture (poster attached). This new lecture series aims to revisit the question of culture and imperialism in postcolonial studies, and reframe dominant conceptions of imperial power in the humanities.

Our inaugural lecture is on “Imperialism, Orientalism and Social Emancipation”and will be delivered by Vivek Chibber, Professor of Sociology at New York University and author of Postcolonial Theory and the Spectre of Capital (2013) and Locked in Place: State-Building and Late Industrialization in India (2003). His critique of postcolonial theory unleashed one of the most important debates in social and cultural theory in recent years, and is collected in The Debate on Postcolonial Theory and the Spectre of Capital (2016).

The lecture will take place on 21 March in Grimond Lecture Theatre 3 @ 5pm, and will be followed by a drinks reception.

Please join, and encourage colleagues and students to attend this special event. All welcome.
