In collaboration with the Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy (CRMEP) at Kingston University London, the ICA presents a discussion around the nature of capitalism today, with speakers Étienne Balibar, Brenna Bhandar, Sara Salem, and Keston Sutherland, moderated by Éric Alliez and Peter Osborne.
Building on CRMEP’s approach to philosophy as a ‘transdisciplinary practice of critique and concept construction’, Aspects of Capitalism Today brings together a notable group of scholars to ask: what are the most historically distinctive and urgent features of capitalism today? And what new readings of Karl Marx’s Capital can help us to understand them? The panel will address these questions with particular reference to ideas around total subsumption, social reproduction, postcolonialism and the poetics of capital.
This discussion takes its impetus from a new publication from CRMEP titled Capitalism: Concept, Idea, Image – Aspects of Marx’s Capital Today. Edited by Peter Osborne, Éric Alliez and Eric-John Russell, the book collates essays derived from a 2017 conference that looked at the intertwined philosophy and politics of capitalism in the 21st century and was held to mark the 150th anniversary of the first publication of Marx’s Capital. The book features contributions from Éric Alliez, Étienne Balibar, Tithi Bhattacharya, Boris Buden, Sara R. Farris, John Kraniauskas, Elena Louisa Lange, Maurizio Lazzarato, Antonio Negri, Peter Osborne, Eric-John Russell, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, and Keston Sutherland,
A reception, hosted by CRMEP in the ICA Bar following the discussion, will launch the paperback edition of Capitalism: Concept, Idea, Image.
