Wednesday, March 14 to Friday March 16, 2018
University of Akureyri
Akureyri, Iceland
The Society of Phenomenology and Media is offering four grants of $500 (US) each (and the waiving of membership and conference fees) to qualified applicants. These awards are intended for new members. The application process is open to doctoral candidates and recent Ph.D.’s as well as established academics, though independent scholars are also encouraged to apply. SPM is open to all schools of thought, though these awards are intended to broaden its scope to include political, dialectical, and theoretical thinkers in addition to philosophers and media theorists.
The overarching theme of the 20th Annual Conference of the Society for Phenomenology and Media is “Global Media Literacy in the Digital Age.” We encourage submissions that speak to this theme in a broad sense or to other pertinent topics.
At present, three panels are being formed and open to participation:
1. Social or Anti-Social Media? Technological Mobility and Economic Mobility
2. Free Market Dumbing Down: Fake News, Twitter, and Facebook
3. Capitalism as Artificial Intelligence
Applicants need not strictly adhere to these topics. Other proposals will also be considered. The only requirement is that the paper proposal be connected to media in a broad sense. Phenomenological approaches are not necessary. This year, SPM encourages thinkers from the variety of Marxist schools to apply.
Grantees will receive their stipends upon arrival in Akureyri. They are required to stay for all three days of the conference, attend the conference reception and dinner (both included in the waiver of fees). Grantees will be contacted by the panel chair to which they are assigned.
The deadline for this application is December 17, 2017.
All inquiries and applications should be directly addressed to: Paul Majkut paul.majkut@gmail.com
Professor Majkut will contact applicants if questions arise.
The application must be submitted on and limited to the one-page application form provided. Please, no more than one page.
