World in Crisis: A Global Analysis of Marx’s Law of Profitability is a new book published by Haymarket and edited by Guglielmo Carchedi and Michael Roberts. It is composed of empirical analyses of the movement in the profitability of capital by authors from Europe, North America, South America and Asia, showing the connection between profitability, growth and crises in the world capitalist economy.

Michael Roberts is a co-editor of World in Crisis and author of The Great Recession – a Marxist view; The Long Depression; Marx 200. He blogs at thenextrecession.wordpress.com.  He will provide an overview of the key themes in the book. World in Crisis has a specific aim: to provide empirical validity to the hypothesis that the cause of recurring and regular economic crises or slumps in output, investment, and employment in modern economies can be found in Marx’s law of the tendential fall in the rate of profit.

Juan Pablo Mateo Tomé, Professor of Applied Economics at the University of Valladolid (Spain), has published in the Review of Radical Political Economics, Capital & Class, World Review of Political Economy.  He is currently working in a forthcoming book, The theory of crisis and the Great Recession in Spain (Palgrave). He would like to explain the main particularities of capital accumulation in Spain until 2007-08, which was largely driven by a housing boom. His aim is to highlight the key role of profitability as the cause of the imbalances in the Spanish economy, mainly relating surplus and indebtedness.

Maria N Ivanova teaches international economics and political economy at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her main research interests include the political economy of the United States, international political economy, money and finance, and social theory. Her paper – ‘The Search for the Falling Rate of Profit’ – will discuss some of the limitations of the search for an empirical proof of the falling rate of profit and critically interrogate the necessity of finding such a proof.
